Pitch Black Garnished With Sauce

Chapter 1
Akira: Hello, Nero. Is something wrong? You're looking all around.
Nero: Oh, Sage. I've been smellin' somethin' burnin' around here.
Akira: Now that you mention it, you're right. No way, is it a forest fire…?
Nero: It wouldn't be good if that's the case, so I figured I should find the cause as soon as possible… Hm?
Mithra: …
Akira: Oh, Mithra's… burning something.
Nero: That smell is…
Black smoke rose from behind Mithra in a cloud. Nero and I looked at each other, then approached him.
Akira: Mithra, do you have a bonfire?
Mithra: Yes. I'm hungry so I'm making something to snack on.
Nero: …I don't see any pots or pans for that.
Akira: That's right. The only thing here is a bonfire… Ah!
Akira: Mithra, are you making a baked potato, by any chance?
Mithra: Baked potato? What is that?
Akira: It's a potato roasted over an open fire. They're sweet, flaky, and delicious.
Nero: Your world's cuisine is as interestin' as ever, Sage.
Mithra: I don't know about that, but it is not a baked potato. …It's about time.
Akira: I-isn't it too hot to stick your hand in a bonfire…!?
Mithra: It is hot, but that's nothing to worry about.
Mithra withdrew his hand from the fire holding a black lump.
Nero: That's…
Mithra: Is it not cooked to perfection? I won't give it to you.
Nero: No, it's just charcoal…
Paying no heed to Nero's muttered words, Mithra bit into the charcoal.
Akira: Oh, does it taste good?
Mithra: …It's so-so.
Nero: Hold on. What was it originally…?
Mithra: It was a fruit that had fallen there. It smelled sweet, so I tried roasting it.
Mithra: Yet it doesn't taste as good as I had expected and it sticks to my teeth… I'm feeling somewhat disgusted.
At that moment, the green gaze which was sullenly directed at me suddenly shifted next to me.
Nero: Uh, what…?
Mithra: If you're here, then it's just fine.
Mithra: Something black, savoury, and well-done. Please make it.
Chapter 2
After Mithra issued the sudden order, Nero and I had to search for ingredients for the dish.
Nero: Sorry you gotta help me, Sage.
Akira: It's no bother at all. I'm doing it because I want to.
Akira: But it's a difficult task.
Nero: Haha… That's right. There're ingredients in the forest, but it'd be a shame to turn them into charcoal.
Nero: But I dunno what he'll do if I disobey him…
I was listening to Nero's anguish as we walked through the forest when—
Akira: (...Huh?)
Akira: Doesn't something smell kind of sweet?
Nero: Oh, you noticed it too. This smell's probably…
Nero looked around, then started walking towards a tree. I followed after him.
Nero: Knew it.
Akira: Wow… Amazing! There's a lot of sap coming out!
Nero: It's called a caramel tree—its sap has a caramel flavour. Interestin', ain't it?
Akira: It certainly has a wonderful smell, like caramel… Ah, there are nut-like fruits at the top.
Nero: …So that's it.
Nero visually compared the fruit on the tree with the fruit that had fallen on the ground and nodded.
Nero: This is probably what Mithra burnt and ate.
Akira: Oh, this?
Nero: Earlier, Mithra said that it smelled sweet but tasted bad, right?
Nero: The caramel tree's sap is very sweet, but the fruit, not so much.
Akira: I see… So the smell was probably coming from the sap, not the fruit he picked up.
Nero: Yeah. No wonder it didn't taste good.
Nero: But, the sweet smell of the sap can be used.
Nero didn't hesitate to gather branches from the caramel tree. Then, he collected the fruit growing on a nearby tree and began to check the smell and taste with a serious look.
Akira: (Ohh… Like a professional chef.)
Nero: Now I need the main ingredient…
Nero: Yeah, a forest like this might have that.
Akira: That?
Nero nodded at my words, then pushed his way into the nearby bushes.
Nero: …Sure enough, found it.
Nero: Sage, look.
Akira: Ah, that's…!
Chapter 3
Once we returned to Mithra, Nero set about cooking right away.
Nero: All right, I guess this is good enough.
He retrieved a plate using magic and skillfully arranged the food on it. Finally, he added a thick sauce.
Nero: Here you go. A well-done baked potato with bellnut sauce.
The finished dish—a baked potato—was much darker than what I was used to.
Mithra: Is it not under-baked?
Akira: Still!? It's burnt pretty well…
Nero: Well, it might seem like that. But it should taste just the way you like it.
Mithra: Hmmm.
Mithra returned his gaze to the plate, then grabbed the piping hot potato—steam still rising from it—with his bare hands.
Mithra: Munch munch munch…
Nero & Akira: …
Mithra: It is delicious.
Nero: Haha… That's great.
Mithra: Seconds.
Akira: Huh. You already ate it!?
Mithra: Yes. Please hurry up.
In no time at all, Mithra had finished his baked potatoes and left.
Akira: Thank you so much for your hard work. It's impressive that you fulfilled Mithra's request while making such a delicious-looking dish.
Nero: No, you helped me come up with that dish because you told me about the baked potato. Thanks.
Akira: Ahaha, I never thought the first thing I said to Mithra would be a hint.
Akira: It was pitch black, but the sauce looked so delicious… It almost made my stomach rumble.
Nero: I see. Then I was right to set these aside.
Nero suddenly took something out of the extinguished bonfire.
Akira: Those are… Baked potatoes, by any chance?
Nero: Yeah. I secretly baked ours later so they'd be cooked just right.
Nero picked up a baked potato and split it in two. The inside was soft, flaky, and golden in colour; a sweet smell filled the area.
Nero: Here, this is thanks for today. Careful, it's still hot.
Akira: Thank you! Wow, it smells so good…
Nero: I used caramel wood for the fire. They were steamed slowly, so they have a nice smell.
Nero: These ones weren't cooked as long as Mithra's, so you should be able to enjoy the smell more.
Akira: Ahaha. If Mithra finds out, he might want to eat these baked potatoes too.
Nero: Well then, better eat 'em up before he smells them.
We looked at each other and lightly raised our hands holding our baked potatoes. It was like a toast of gratitude.
Card Episode - You're a Good Listener
Akira: A lot happened when we visited Derrick's house the other day, but what left an impression on you?
Nero: Hmm, let's see… Come to think of it, I was takin' a break under a tree when Mithra suddenly laid down next to me.
Akira: Oh, did that happen!? It's kind of a strange combination…
Nero: I know, right? I was surprised too.
Akira: But Mithra has that injury from the calamity, doesn't he? Did he sleep well?
Nero: No, he didn't. He opened his eyes as soon as I thought he was sleepin'.
Nero: "I thought it would be a good place to rest because you looked comfortable, but I cannot sleep at all."
Nero: He complained to me.
Akira: How unreasonable…!
Nero: Not only that, he stayed there and kept talkin' to me, which made it hard for me to move despite how awkward it was.
Nero: I listened to his story and even responded, but by the time Rutile came lookin' for him, I had been alone with him for a while and kinda felt like I was dyin'.
Nero: Once again, I thought it was amazin' that you always keep him company so he can sleep.
Akira: Ahaha, thank you.
Akira: (Maybe Mithra didn't move because Nero's a good listener and he was enjoying chatting with him…?)
